Role: Rules Engine Engineer
Department: Engineering
Date: March 2008

Expected Contributions to the Role
The position has responsibility to provide the development team with
expertise in the design and integration of a core rules engine
implementation to be utilized across multiple products.
Responsibilities also include training of other members of the
development team through hands-on tutorial and the creation of
supporting documentation.

Major Areas of Accountability that Support Contributions
• Ability to work in a streamlined, dynamic, fast-paced
environment.
• Be self-motivated, positively-focused, collaborative and
highly organized.
 Demonstrate leadership in helping to establish a plan for
development and rollout of a core rules engine platform integration.
 Create documentation of the platform integration, including
representative usage examples.
 Perform hands-on training of the rules engine platform
integration to other members of the development team.
 Ability to work in an Agile product development process,
attending daily stand-ups, sprint review/kick-off meetings and
project reviews.
 Communicate status clearly to manager and team.
• Respect for the Quality Assurance process and ability to work
cooperatively with the test team.

Education/Training and experience

• In-depth knowledge of rules engine theory and implementation.
• Experience in 2-3 start-to-finish rules engine platform
integration initiatives.
• Experience in documenting at least 1 said initiative.
• Application to a business domain such as POS, insurance or
finance (outside of Education or R&D)
• Minimum 4 years working experience in rules engine
development.
• Experience with JBoss Rules (Drools) and/or JESS.
• Previous focus in a product environment (non-IT application
focus).
• Ability to accurately estimate project durations and meet
schedules.
• Solid understanding of OO principles and software development
processes.
• Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or related field.

Required Skills and Technologies
• Java, JBoss Rules/JESS, Tomcat/Glassfish/JBoss, ant/Maven,
JUnit/TestNG, service-oriented architecture

Desired Skills and Technologies
• Spring framework, iterative/Agile development processes,
software-as-a-service

Education/Training and experience

• In-depth knowledge of test automation.

initiatives.

• Broad experience in testing and working on technical systems
and projects.
• 5 – 7 years working experience in software testing, quality
assurance or software development.
• 1 – 3 years of experience with at least one flavor of
Linux/Unix.
• 3 – 4 years of experience with a source control system.
• Ability to define data scenarios to support end-to-end
systems testing.
• Experience with testing web-based and server-side
applications.
• Experience with Silk Test, LoadRunner or WinRunner.
• Ability to accurately estimate project durations and meet
schedules.
• Solid understanding of the QA process.
• Strong problem solving & investigative skills.
• Bachelors Degree in Computer Information Systems, Computer
Science or related field a plus.
