JOB DESCRIPTION:
The successful candidate will manage the Oracle & SQL database
development/support team.

The Manager, Database Administration will manage the architecture,
documentation and support of the database solutions for processing
large volumes of data from disparate sources in near-real-time. As
Database Manager you will play a key role in the infrastructure
organization by defining data requirements and managing resources to
implement solutions and processes to assist in maturing the Database
organization within the Infrastructure Group and organization as a
whole. This position will be responsible for developing changes to
the underlying data model, ensuring that existing customer data is
preserved between releases, creating long term data archiving
strategies, and implementing highly available and recoverable
architectures.

This role will also lead and support the day-to-day enterprise
technical operations of our corporate location. The role will provide
guidance in the activities associated with the identification,
prioritization, and resolution of reported problems with internal
database applications either by phone or on site.

Participate as an active member of the technical management team
providing regular updates on the team's challenges and successes. The
position reports to the Director of Infrastructure.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Manage all database activities and be responsible for
carrying out and implementing strategic design and development
solutions.
• Design Oracle & SQL database environments that comply with
business requirements for data throughput and availability.
• Set database technology direction, proposing to management a
set of software, hardware, and additional capabilities for data
storage, backup, recovery, and data warehousing.
• Measure and maintain database systems to meet specified
performance and storage requirements.
• Review and/or design database architectures needed to support
newly proposed or purchased software applications.
• Assure system level performance as defined by Service Level
Agreements (SLAs). Assisting with and developing SLAs where necessary
• Monitor computer systems performance, capacity, and
integration with other systems through data gathering, metrics
reporting, trending, and assessment (including SLA compliance)
• Diligently drive data throughput improvements and data base
tuning tasks
• Present system changes to the appropriate review boards
• Document configuration and maintain configuration change
control
• Provide strategic planning to optimize use of resources
across diverse projects and initiatives
• Collaboratively define and execute enterprise application
roadmap to keep enterprise environment up to industry standards
• Inform and report issue status to IS management
• Design, plan, and implement policies to support the company's
information privacy, and data security requirements.
• Other duties as assigned.


LEADERSHIP DUTIES

• Manage team of individuals responsible for database
management activities and support
• Has a strong influence to delegate activities and resources
within approved budget/policy
• Has responsibility for making resource decisions that affect
a department and location
• Participates in annual strategic planning
• Participates in annual review planning and performance review
for team
• Directs the day-to-day operations of a functional area
through planning and delegation of work to team leaders and
subordinates.


ESSENTIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

• BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or Mathematics, or
equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge with 4 years of Management
experience.
• Extensive hands-on experience in large-scale analytical data
management systems involving parallel processing and clustering
techniques using Oracle RDBMS. Similar experience with SQL Server
highly desirable.
• In-depth experience with database design, I/O sub-system
tuning for best performance (data file layout, RAID configuration,
etc.), performance-tuning of database SQL code, and application
installation and configuration for Oracle applications.
• Extensive experience supporting multiple environments, such
as development, test, staging and production.
• Specific and advanced experience required in the following
areas: optimizing databases/database servers, backup/recovery (point-
in-time recovery), security architecture, RAC 9i. Experience in a
large scale database processing (preferably in a 24/7) environment.
• Demonstrated excellent communication skills necessary to
present ideas to management and staff with varying levels of
Oracle/SQL knowledge and experience.
• Strong interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively
in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team environment.

DESIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

• BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or Mathematics.
• Strong UNIX (preferably Sun/Solaris) or Linux (RedHat)
skills.
• Strong UNIX scripting skills.
• Significant skills and experience in computer security
technologies such as firewalls, network protocols, encryption, and
system administration.
• Knowledge of Hitachi storage subsystems.
• Leadership, communication, business acumen, technical
aptitude, teamwork, strategic decision-making ability, client focus.
