Newmont - Sr. DBA

Purpose:
Ensures that enterprise and regional Database environments and related services are maintained, supported, optimized, and reliable.

Essential Duties:
* Responsible for supporting all aspects of Newmont*s IT database, systems. Serves as the senior technical subject matter expert and Guides the support and maintenance to standards as applicable to the region, which includes all aspects of the Database environments.
* Serves as the senior technical subject matter expert and guides support activities for all aspects of the Database environments.
* Responsible for providing guidance to DB consultants/contractors regarding Newmont DB priorities, standards and processes. Act as interface between Newmont and any DB Operations consultants.
* Responsible for providing assistance and guidance for all aspects of the regional infrastructure and capacity planning.
* Assists in team scheduling to ensure appropriate support coverage.
* Responsible for ensuring that the Database environments are maintained to provide reliable services for the region, including working with service providers to ensure that the environment is stable and highly available.
* Creates, supports, coordinates and provides leadership for database activities across the enterprise. This includes overall design of databases and the creation and building of data models. Creates logical data models and translates database tables, primary/foreign keys, constraints and other database technologies.
* Creates, reviews, and optimizes databases and supporting database scripts.
* Responsible for optimization of database technologies and software for optimal database performance, resource use, and physical implementations of databases.
* Addresses a variety of database integration issues including migration between disparate databases, integration, maintenance/conversion, capacity planning issues, and new applications.
* Creates, maintains, and supports enterprise RDBMS environments (e.g., development, test, training, and production).
* Monitors and maintains database security and database software.
* Provides advice to applications programmers in the effective use of database languages. Advises on troubleshooting, exception processing needs, and other data management issues.
* Maintains availability and integrity of databases through multiple access schemes. Facilitates sharing of common data by overseeing proper key and index management and data dictionary maintenance.
* May evaluate and recommend testing and evaluation of new procedures, software, and hardware.
* Responsible for the monitoring and management of database backups, logs, archives, and journals. Installs, maintains, and upgrades database software. Restores and/or recovers data as required.
* Creates, procures, and maintains various database-related documents, such as manuals and programmers handbooks.
* Prepares technical documentation.
* Assists with system testing (e.g., setup and configuration of the database environment).
* Communicates with project managers and technical leads about issues within the project/solution being developed.
* Tracks related IT issues, coordinates resolution and assists in driving issues to closure.
* Escalates high severity issues and chronic problems to appropriate management.
* Provides timely follow-through with customers and IT peers on IT service requests and tasks.
* Guides and participation in various IT projects as needed.
* Ensures that Newmont*s methodologies, policies, procedures and standards are adhered to. Maintain a consistent high quality of work across all responsibilities.
* Ensure that all changes to communication and infrastructure systems, whether directly performed, or performed by the Outsource Service Provider, adhere to Newmont standards and procedures, follow SOX-compliant processes, and are fully documented.
* Participate in review of IT Communication and Infrastructure projects and, work with the stakeholders, prepare the necessary scoping documents, including investigation of impact, compliance, cost, and benefits.
* Participate in the preparation and submission of requests for quotes and capital submissions for all equipment required for providing communication services.
* Collaborates with global teams to define policies and is responsible for regional implementation and compliance for policies related to the network infrastructure and operations.
* Promote and adhere to Newmont Regional Occupational Health and Safety policy and procedures. Consistently demonstrate and encourage safe work practices.
* Promote and comply with Newmont goals and values.
* Participates in IT budget planning and review.

Working Conditions:
* Office and field work as required.
* Position may require travel to other domestic and international sites.
Qualifications

Education:
* University Degree or equivalent experience.
* Database certifications a plus.

Experience:
* 7-8 years experience in technical support role.
* 3+ years vendor management experience.
* A minimum of five (5) years* experience, seven (7) years preferred, in expert-level database administration and/or software engineering required.
* Demonstrated deep experience with Oracle and/or SQL Server RDBMS technologies required.
* Advanced skills with Oracle and/or SQL Server tools is required (PL*SQL, SQL*Plus, SQL, TSQL, RDBMS, Import, Export, SQL*Loader, Stored procedures, PL-SQL, Triggers, Constraints.
* Expertise with configuring, implementing and supporting high availability strategies with Oracle systems required.
* Experience with Oracle RAC (advantage but not required).
* Experience with Microsoft SQL server, installation, configuration, tuning, High Availability (clustering) configurations and an understanding of BCDR. Skills in the use of VMWare and SQL a benefit.
* Knowledge of UNIX on platforms that include HPUX, Solaris, and Linux.
* Use of monitoring and troubleshooting utilities to effectively diagnose problems.
* Experience in very large database (VLDB) environments and mission critical database environments in a large sized enterprise required.
o SAP interaction skills a plus.
o Teradata systems skills a plus.
* Ability to lead discussions with technical staff on database design, creation, implementation, and performance tuning on enterprise class products required.
* Ability to present technical concepts to various audiences both technical and non-technical, as well as interact with all levels of management, required.
* Must be able to design/interpret data models and to develop database structures.
* Ability to design/develop and manipulate large, complex data sets required.
* Knowledge of computer and/or operating systems, networks, applications, procedures, and techniques required.
* Deep knowledge of data integrity methods and techniques required.
