General Description

This position is a technical leadership and an individual contributor role in the IT Operations Application Services team. This individual is responsible for leading and working with the Enterprise Architecture group to set technical strategy in the area of web servers and portals. This role requires strong collaboration skills, communication skills, and leadership skills to interact with the various IT Architecture teams, and various VMware Engineering teams as VMware transitions to leading edge, cloud-ready SpringSource portal platforms. The successful candidate will work and interact with all levels of IT Operations, IT Applications, and IT Business Engagement teams to understand their IT business strategy and their implication to the portals infrastructure.

This position also provides support of SDLC environments (Production and Non-Production) for critical vmware.com web applications (Java J2EE, Jive, Lamp-based) by maintaining high application availability (99.95%) and service levels. Troubleshooting complex issues, verification of new application and platform releases/changes, and migration of application server configurations (Spring TC, Weblogic, Tom Cat, Apache). The successful candidate possesses a strong understanding of key business processes and application functionality in a virtualized environment.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

-Collaborate with project, architecture, and release teams, providing architectural design recommendations, driving standards, plan and execute effective transition to production operations
-Define and implement automated methods and industry best practices for consistent installation and configuration of Weblogic Spring TC server for production and non-production environments
-Define operational processes for Run book and SOP documentation, automating routine operational tasks
-Maintain high availability and performance for production vmware.com web applications such as Portals, VMworld, and Communities
-Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve complex production web application issues reported through monitoring systems, support teams, and trouble tickets as per established SLAs
-Drive Incident, Problem, and Change Management processes working with NOC, Operations, Development, and Management teams to ensure operational consistency and service improvement
-Develops, maintains, and delivers operational Key Performance Metrics reports to IT Management and internal customers for Availability, Performance, and Capacity management
-Provide coaching and assistance to other team members on daily support activities as needed
-Special projects as needed

Education/Work Experience Requirements

-B.S. Degree in Computer Science or equivalent
-Minimum 10 years experience, supporting web applications in a large enterprise environments

Additional Requirements

-Hands on experience with Weblogic, SpringTC, and Apache Tomcat server administration
-Experience supporting custom J2EE, Lamp, Jive-based applications in an integrated Oracle Database and Middleware enterprise environment
-Proficient use of Application Performance Management tools such as Quest Foglight, Zenoss, Website Pulse
-Excellent skills in Unix Shell/Perl/Ruby/Python scripting and task automation
-Solid knowledge and demonstrated support of Linux RedHat server, BIND DNS, ESX Server, Virtual Center, NFS, LDAP, and SAN/NAS storage systems in a virtualized environment
-Detailed working experience supporting integration of web applications with enterprise Oracle Databases, E-Business Suite, Middleware, and Single Sign-On technologies
-Solid problem diagnosis, troubleshooting, and problem solving
-Proficient use of trouble ticketing systems and working knowledge of incident management, change management, and problem management processes
