Tri-State Generation & Transmission Assoc - Engineer I

Tri-State is a Denver based progressive and rapidly growing non-profit consumer owned wholesale supplier of electric power to forty-four distribution cooperatives in Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and New Mexico.​ With over 1100 employees, Tri-State operates and maintains fossil fuel power plants with owned coal-fired capacity of 1826 megawatts, gas turbines with 526 megawatts of capacity, and over 5000 miles of high voltage transmission lines.​

This position has responsibility for the planning and development of Tri-State’s bulk electric system at the transmission and sub-transmission levels, including coordination with Member system plans at the distribution, sub-transmission and transmission level.​



The job incorporates some or all of the following, depending on job grade:



· Develop and maintain transmission line, transformer and shunt facility databases.​

· Prepare project information for capital construction budgets.​

· Perform joint planning studies and operating studies with other utilities.​

· Analyze Member System plans and coordinate such plans with planned system additions.​

· Initiate plans for transmission and substation facilities that adhere to established reliability criteria and meet immediate and long-term expansion requirements.​

· Perform transmission interconnection studies.​

· Resolve transmission system problems by performing technical studies of the interconnected transmission system using power flow, short-circuit, and stability analyses to identify solutions; prepare and present resulting capital budget items.​

· Review and evaluate real-time transmission data and operating limits as required and coordinate results with Power System Operations and Engineering.​

· Prepare written reports documenting the results of transmission system studies; present these results in both internal and external venues.​

· Prepare and maintain detailed Base Case models of the interconnected transmission system for use in the analysis of specific project alternatives, and for use in the coordinated study of systems in the Western Interconnection.​

· Prepare studies and documentation demonstrating compliance with the Reliability Standards of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation.​

· Train engineering colleagues in Power System Planning in the use of tools and techniques used in planning studies; mentor where appropriate.​

· Initiate or participate in the development of long-term transmission plans that are consistent with Tri-State’s Business Plan.​



(Requirements listed below are for Senior Engineer position.​ Requirements for the Engineer I - III are similar but less in overall experience.​)

· Bachelor's degree in related Engineering discipline with Electrical Engineering preferred.​

· Eight (8) years of related electric utility experience in transmission system planning to include system analysis and planning methods, project coordination, and supervisory experience desired.​

· Registered Professional Engineer (preferred, not required).​

· Extensive knowledge of electric utility functions.​

· Working knowledge of government regulations affecting utilities.​

· Working knowledge of budget preparation and administration.​

· Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of others.​

· Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written, including public speaking.​

· Ability to maintain effective working relationships.​

· Ability and willingness to travel as necessary.​ (Possession of valid driver's license or ability to obtain.​)

· General knowledge of RUS policy requirements (preferred, not required).​

· General knowledge of computers and computer programming.​
