SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Denver Public Schools is seeking a detail-oriented individual with proven leadership abilities to manage the district’s data network and security team

DPS is one of the 50 largest school districts in the country and consists of 147 facilities; all connected via a fiber Wide Area Network (WAN).​ The Local Area Network (LAN) consists of approximately 1,280 miles of Category 6 data cabling, which supports approximately 91,000 network connections and over 12,000 telephones.​

The DPS Network (DPSNet) is a municipal routed IP network using a hub and spoke design.​ There are 84 sites connected with Qwest Metropolitan Optical Ethernet (QMOE).​ There are 41 sites connected with Comcast’s Institutional Network (INET).​ Seven (7) sites are connected to DPSNet via dark fiber.​ Four (4) sites are connected via a Qwest DS1 point to point to the Districts Primary Data Center

This position will manage a network team of ten staff responsible for supporting network communications for one of Colorado’s largest private networks

Responsible for network design and implementation

Assists in managing the district’s FCC E-Rate program.​ This includes facilitating all network-based RFP’s, compiling the SLD application forms, coordinating all equipment and services deployment, managing all vendor invoices, and ensuring full program compliance.​

Individual will be responsible for Network/​Datacom project management.​ Major projects starting in the next year are:
I.​ Cisco Call Manager VoIP/​Unified Communications implementation (including the replacement of 12,000 handsets at 147 facilities).​ Three year project.​
II.​ Implementation of and end-to-end Cisco environment for LAN, WAN and wireless LAN network equipment for over 130 schools and administrative facilities.​ This is replacing an existing end-of-life Cisco infrastructure.​ Three year project.​

Work collaboratively with customers, stakeholders, managers, vendors, and technology team members to define and execute IT projects that meet customer objectives on time and within budget.​

Assume primary responsibility for project coordination and communication on all assigned programs or projects including development and monitoring of project charters, plans, work breakdown schedules, milestone and status reports, resource plans, multi-million dollar budgets, and other deliverables.​

Identify, track, and resolve issues and risks associated with projects or programs managed.​ Communicate risks and issues regularly to project team and stakeholders, including executive stakeholders.​



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Network manager and their team are responsible for all aspects of the District’s MAN, LAN, WLAN, and Info Security.​ Some of the major responsibilities of the Manager and the Network Department team members are as follows:

Leader of the district’s Internet Safety and Filtering Committee

Critical member of the district’s Change Control Committee

Critical member of the district’s Technology Architecture Review Committee

Critical member of the district’s Information Technology Team

Critical member of the district’s Hardware Standards Committee

Maintains access to Qwest’s QMOE WAN network

Manage 48 sites of Comcast I-Net and dark fiber

Districts Internet Service Providers utilizing BGP

Manages Information Security (includes Firewall, Intrusion Detection and Intrusion Prevention, Internet Filtering systems)

Coordinates the ordering and installation of carrier services

Maintains 24x7x365 metrics for all network systems

Provide root-cause analysis reports for all network failures

Provides monthly network utilization reports

Oversees Cisco SMARTnet and other network maintenance contracts

Maintains network hardware inventory to manage end-of-life and replacement cycles

Tracks chronic issues and oversees resolutions

Maintains budget and approves network purchases

Participates in technology RFP creations, evaluations, and selections

Maintains On-call and vacation schedule to ensure 24x7 technician coverage

Ensures network department is properly trained to perform and support current and upcoming technologies

Oversees the procurement and proper implementation and use of network monitoring and management tools

Researches and evaluates new technologies and tools that will provide improved features/​functionality for DPS network and positively impacting school classrooms

Facilitates goal setting and employee performance evaluations for the network department staff

Facilitates network departments submission to the SLD E-Rate program

Coordinates implementation schedule of Federally funded network equipment and ensures compliancy to E-Rate program

Oversees network architecture diagrams and building as-build AutoCAD drawings

Works with project managers and vendors to ensure new construction and remodel projects are supported and inclusive of network infrastructure requirements

Ensures quality control and documentation for network systems and infrastructure

Reviews customer satisfaction surveys and works with team to identify successes and work on improvements as applicable

Manages the District’s Internet Class B address system

Monitors network performance to insure efficient use and prevent misuse.​

Designs and implements changes to network infrastructure.​

Assists network team and school personnel with network designs.​

Keeps abreast of changing hardware and software technology.​

Provides regular activity and status reports to management.​

Performs additional duties as assigned.​

SKILLS/​EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

A minimum of five years management/​leadership experience is required.​

A minimum of 10 years’ experience in a network operations environment or a similar telecommunications environment is required.​

Working knowledge of Cisco switching and routing is required.​


PREFERRED SKILLS:

Patient when working with people and technology.​

Excellent interpersonal communication skills with the ability to interface with all levels of management and the end-user community.​

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.​

Strong professional writing skills

Temperament to work under pressure and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and other departments.​

Must be able to be on-call after normal business hours as needed.​

Must be able to work other shifts as required.​

Working knowledge of data networking equipment, systems and techniques.​

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Business Analyst will be skilled in the detailed analysis of business processes and elicitation of requirements related to Business Intelligence (reporting) development efforts.​ This person will assist in the definition and documentation of business rules based on information provided from multiple, and sometimes conflicting, business units.​ The candidate will also translate conceptual data into functional requirements documents and mock ups (wire frames).​ To a lesser degree, the candidate will be called on to play a role in the following areas specific to each report development effort: product management, quality assurance, and release planning.​

The Business Analyst works with technical and non-technical teams and must communicate effectively according to the audience.​ The ideal candidate is comfortable with a high degree of change and is capable of working in either a traditional (waterfall) or agile development and project management environment.​


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Act as a liaison to staff, schools, and management on all District-wide reporting solutions.​

Develop and maintain productive working relationships with key internal clients and other resources.​

Understand the larger vision for reporting within the District and understand how each new effort fits within that framework.​

Work within the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), as it pertains to reporting, to elicit and document business needs, business rules, and functional requirements.​ This may include: sample data extracts, mock ups (wire frames), and process flows.​

Strive for state-of-the-art knowledge of BI tools and reporting best practices.​ Experience with SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), ProClarity or similar reporting tools is highly desirable.​


OTHER DUTIES:

The candidate will assist in the management of each reporting effort to ensure that development sprints on scheduled appropriately and are delivered on schedule.​

The candidate will assist in the quality assurance and quality control processes.​

The candidate will assist in the training, release and support of reporting solutions.​

The candidate will have the ability to come up to speed quickly with regard to the data architecture for the District and how best to source data for reporting.​



WORK EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or equivalent, with a Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or related studies preferred.​ Seven (7) or more years of related experience, which includes at least two (2) or more years of experience supporting and /​ or working with a variety of reporting solutions.​ Demonstrated knowledge of information technology and computer network systems.​ Demonstrated experience discussing issues at a technical or non-technical level, depending on the audience.​ Demonstrated successful experience planning and organizing work activities to meet deadlines.​
