Primary Purpose

Has overall primary responsibility for support of the production databases to achieve the availability, performance, security, and business goals of the enterprise.  This role also has secondary responsibility to back-up and support the logical design and data architecture DBA role.


Duties and Responsibilities

•Maintaining production relational databases on Oracle and SQL Server platforms
•Monitoring, administration, and control of DB availability to achieve DB availability goals
•Monitoring, administration, and control of DB performance to achieve DB performance goals
•Monitoring, administration, and control of DB security to achieve DB security goals
•Planning, creating, and executing DB maintenance tasks on an ongoing and ad-hoc basis
•Monitoring and control of logical and physical DB space utilization
•Monitors and manages database backups, logs, and journals; installs, maintains, and upgrades database software; restores and/or recovers data as required
•Monitoring OS and hardware configurations and performance on DB systems and work with Systems Administration teams to ensure availability, performance, and security goals are met at OS and hardware levels for DB systems
•Creates, procures, and maintains various database utilities and documentation related to production DB access, production job schedules, and availability and recovery procedures
•Work with logical design and data architecture DBA’s to ensure effective logical design of database schema and data objects


Knowledge and Skill Requirements

•Extensive knowledge of relational database availability, performance, and security principles, concepts, and tools
•Extensive knowledge and skills surrounding all types of database objects
•Expert knowledge and skill with DB backup and recovery models, processes, and utilities
•Expert knowledge of current DBMS products, primarily Oracle 11g but also MS SQL, as well as knowledge of related technologies, applications, and processes
•Expert knowledge and skill with SQL; both DDL (data definition) and DML (data manipulation)
•Proficiency with DB performance monitoring tools like Oracle Enterprise Manager, Microsoft DB Performance Objects, and Quest Software Foglight and Spotlight
•Proficiency with design and data modeling tools like TOAD for DBA
•Proficient in Linux OS commands
•Proficiency with ETL (extract-transform-load) solutions like MS DTS and MS SSIS
•Proficient in MS Windows OS commands
•Strong interpersonal, analytical, and logical skills
•Strong communications, writing, and presentation skills
•Proven ability to communicate on a business and technical level
•Must thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, multi-tasking, and results focused environment
•Policy definition and enforcement
•Ability to be on-call support and work nights and weekends
•Ability to work effectively and efficiently with little supervision


Experience and Education Requirements

•10+ years DBA experience, primarily in Oracle but also some MS SQL environments
•5+ years experience administering highly available, high performance, and high transaction processing database environments on both Oracle and MS SQL platforms
•5+ years experience performance monitoring and tuning within Oracle and MS SQL environments
•5+ years experience administering security within Oracle and MS SQL environments
•5+ years experience with designing and implementing ETL processes as well as with data initialization, loading, and data conversion projects
•5+ years experience utilizing data modeling and development tools
•3+ years experience creating and maintaining database documentation, diagrams, and procedures
•Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, technical training, or work experience
