Position Description
Position is located in the NOAA-Boulder Network Operations Center
(NBNOC), organizationally under the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric
Research (OAR) in Boulder, Colorado. The NBNOC is responsible for the
operation and maintenance of the David Skaggs Research Center (DSRC)
backbone network, its external connections and all associated network
services. The incumbent of this position will serve as a computer
network specialist/engineer with responsibilities in maintaining,
upgrading, and assisting in the management of the DSRC network.
POSITION DUTIES:
- Network Maintenance -- Contractor staff shall work independently and
as part of a team to perform regular maintenance function on network
hardware/ software systems and cable plant.
- Network Design - Contractor staff shall work independently and as
part of a team in the design of high performance network
hardware/software systems and cable plant.
- Computer Operating System Support - Contractor staff shall support
computer systems including Sun Solaris, LINUX, MS Windows, and OS X.
- Documentation - Contractor staff shall work independently and as
part of a team in the creation documents related to high performance
network hardware, software and cable plant including reports, proposals,
and presentations.
Other requirements
Able to travel up to 6 times per year totaling up to 6 weeks
Education and Experience (Required)
BS Engineering, Computer Sciences, or similar,
OR equivalent experience may be substituted
1 year experience with network administration, preferably not just Windows environment
Other Factors (Optional)
Full-time, 40 hours per week, M-F
Travel to NOAA sites as often as monthly, no more than 6 times per year, one week each trip
Occasional overtime required
May require occasional lifting or moving of items up to 25 lbs.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Assist with the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of
PC's and associated peripherals for entire division. Assist with
intranet/internet network communications and related security. Perform
operations functions and support for the VAX/VMS system. Support
desktops in Windows.
POSITION DUTIES:
Servers: Install, configure and maintain Windows servers. Including but
not limited to file and print servers, DNS servers, anti-virus and
anti-spyware servers, email servers, backup servers and associated tape
libraries.
Personal Computers/HUB: Assist with the installation and maintenance of
all division hardware and software. Perform hardware and software
troubleshooting and diagnostics, upgrades and configurations. Maintain
PC security programs, scientific software packages, third party
software, and Microsoft software including operating systems and MS
Office products. Install and maintain division printers. Perform VAX/VMS
system backups and restore as required. Provide focal point for future
system upgrades and enhancements.
Network Support: Assist with the maintenance and support of internal and external network connections and related security.
Documentation/Reports: Write, maintain and update system procedures and
diagrams for VAX/VMS system operations. Archive to permanent media,
historical profiler and other data as necessary. Provide monthly input
for SRG contract status reports.
Special Projects: Provide backup support for network related tasks.
Research and recommend system/software upgrades and enhancements based
on current industry standards and division/laboratory requirements.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
Education/Experience:
• Associate's degree in related discipline at least three year's
practical experience in a related area. Experience may be substituted
for education.
• Ability to troubleshoot PC hardware/peripherals and perform necessary repair or replacement.
• Practical experience in network administration and system security desired.
