Job description:
POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for planning, coordinating and administration of MS SQL Server & Oracle or Unix database(s), including base definition, structures, documentation, upgrades, long-range requirements, operational guidelines and protection. Ensures accuracy and completeness of data in master files and various support tools, such as base dictionaries. establishes and maintains security integrity controls. Formulates and monitors policies, procedures and standards relating to database management. Responsibilities may include the following: troubleshooting, recovery, tuning of the database, software installation, resolving errors and failures, auditing activities and resource utilization.

Also responsible for the analysis, installation, maintenance, upgrades, long-range requirements and operational guidelines of computer hardware and software on MS SQL Server & UNIX systems. Proposes and implements system enhancements that will improve the reliability and performance of the system, including security integrity controls. Monitors usage and performance. Formulates and monitors policies, procedures, and standards relating to database management. Responsibilities may include troubleshooting, recovery, resolving Windows or UNIX errors and failures, auditing activities and resource utilization. Trains personnel on system usage.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Installation, troubleshooting, configuration, upgrade and patching of Oracle v8.x & v9.x database servers on Unix, AIX & MS Operating Systems, and MS SQL Server database servers.
- Manage and monitor Oracle and MS SQL Server database environments on 24/7 basis in a corporate data center. (Includes on-call support.)
- Trouble-shoot application and database performance issues pertaining to Oracle and MS SQL Server databases
- Work independently to perform routine database change requests by development and application support for internal and external (Client facing) Oracle and MS SQL Server database application
- Design, develop, test & implements SQL and PL/SQL procedures to maintain and/or modify operational data.
- Perform Oracle & MS SQL Server backup and recovery processes and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Computer Science field or equivalent, plus up to 8 years of related experience
- 3 years experience with Oracle 8/9 in a clustered environment.
- 1-2 years experience with MS SQL Server database in Windows environment.
- Installation, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and stored procedures of Oracle 8/9 and Veritas clustering.
- Understanding of IBM AIX and Sun OS level issues and effect on Oracle implementations and performance.
- Solid background installing, configuring & troubleshooting Oracle 8/9 on IBM AIX and Sun using enterprise mass storage / RAID configurations (EMC, A1000 Sun arrays).
- Some experience in database design and implementation, working with application engineers.
- Team player with good verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent analytical and trouble shooting skills
- Experience working in a fast-paced mission-critical Operations environment
- Able to work independently and come up to speed quickly in new technologies
- Hands on work with IBM AIX, Windows, Sun Solaris, Veritas Cluster Server, Visio, DB Artisan, and Toad.
- Vendor-certified training in Oracle, Windows, Solaris.
- Non-standard hours, e.g. off business hours and weekends required.
- Occasional (rare) travel, mainly for training or launch support.
