University of Colorado Denver - Sr. Database Administrator

The University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) Office of Information Technology (OIT) Research and Shared Services Division (RSS) is seeking a full-time Sr. Database Administrator responsible for the planning, design, implementation, administration and support of multiple enterprise-wide databases, as well as individual databases developed and deployed for respective clients. RSS's technology services provide researchers, faculty and the campus a robust offering of cutting edge systems and services, including application and database design and development, service and server hosting, managed services and consulting in technology. This University Staff (unclassified) position will function as a work lead and/or subject matter expert providing senior level technical expertise and knowledge and ultimately will play a larger role within OIT in leading DBA activities. They will be part of an experienced and close-knit team, working fully independently to complete tasks and projects assigned to them. They will be assigned to support multiple database systems and will serve as the primary point of contact for these systems, interacting directly with the system owner in monitoring system health and responding to any issues or requests. One primary system they will be responsible for administering is the enterprise health data warehouse utilized by Health Data Compass (healthdatacompass.org). This position will serve as a senior level resource to the Director of Research and Shared Services. Salary and Benefits:
The hiring salary range for this position has been established as $84,640 -- $105,000 and is commensurate with skills and experience.

Posting Description:
This position will be responsible for the planning, design, implementation, administration and support of multiple enterprise-wide databases as well as individual databases developed and deployed for RSS clients. Examples of work performed are listed below.

• Plan, design, install, configure, upgrade, administer, monitor, and secure production and non-production Oracle OLTP and OLAP databases in diverse operational environments.
• Work closely with application developers, vendors, system administrators, security personnel and auditors to ensure best practices are followed for database (and related system) design, integrity, performance, and security.
• Collaborates on development of complex technical and security standards. Consults on complex technical issues and contributes to architectural decisions.
• Troubleshoot and resolve database and database-related issues.
• Develop, implement, test and maintain database backup and disaster recovery plans.
• Support database upgrades and patching as well as scheduled application releases.
• Administer all database objects including (but not limited to) schemas, tables, indexes, views, procedures, and packages.
• Monitor and analyze database performance indicators and recommend/implement improvement actions as necessary.
• Ensure the availability and continuity of database services by managing system changes and responding to service outages or events.
• Monitor user access and any security issues.
• Provide oversight and expertise to application developers in SQL coding and tuning.
• Assist developers in configuring and debugging database connections.
• Produce and maintain database (and related system) policy, process, and procedure documentation.
• Build and maintain documentation that describes database configurations, functions, access, security measures, etc.
• Continue development of skills and expertise on current and emerging technologies.
• Periodic after-hours support will be required though telecommuting is typically feasible.
• Provide database expertise and assistance to other OIT team members.
• Assist in training less experienced DBAs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree.

• Substitution: A combination of related work experience in the areas listed above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the bachelor's degree. The other minimum requirements listed below can overlap with this experience.

• 6+ years Oracle Database Administration experience.
• Oracle Database 11g experience.
• Experience in Linux based Operating Systems (Red Hat Enterprise, Oracle Linux OS, etc.)
• Experience with performance analysis, performance tuning and debugging performance issues.
• Shell scripting experience (BASH, Cron, KSH, Perl, C++ or similar scripting languages).

COMPETENCIES/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
• Proficient in all aspects of Oracle database management and has advanced knowledge and experience in many areas of management including: Database design; Performance tuning; Backup and recovery; Security; Disaster Recovery; Capacity management.
• Advanced knowledge of relational database concepts.
• Working knowledge of SQL Plus, OEM, RAC, Audit Vault, RMAN, Oracle OLAP and ASM and other such Oracle-related technologies.
• Extensive knowledge in the following technical areas: architectures and technical standards; database administration tools and utilities; application architecture and design principles; infrastructure architectures -- backup and recovery systems, storage subsystems, HA technologies, replication.
• Understanding of hardware (server, SAN storage, network) design and tuning for optimal database performance. 
• Extensive knowledge on performance analysis, design and connectivity between the databases with various applications and systems.
• Exceptional analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving abilities. 
• Exceptional planning, design, analytic, research and documentation skills.
• Strong interpersonal communication and customer service skills working with non-technical users and stakeholders.
• Ability to educate, train end-users, communicate and effectively present ideas/plans with business and IT stakeholders to gain consensus on requirements
• Ability to work effectively as part of a project team and foster team cooperation.
• Ability to work with a high degree of independence and latitude.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to support multiple projects simultaneously while effectively managing time and prioritizing tasks.
• Familiarity with HIPAA and NIST 800-53 controls.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
• Experience in higher education environment.
• Experience working in a multi-project, customer-service oriented position.
• Oracle Database 12c experience.
• Oracle Database Appliance and/or Oracle Exadata experience.
• Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence (DWBI) experience.
• Experience with MS-SQL server, including installation, configuration and implementation of standard process for recurring tasks like transaction log management.
• Experience with MySQL and PostgreSQL, including installation, configuration and implementation of standard process for recurring tasks like transaction log management.
• Experience with Oracle Healthcare and Portal applications.
• DBA team lead and/or management experience.
• Experience with Java development and deployment.
• Experience working with Oracle support.
• Experience writing, troubleshooting, optimizing and debugging PL/SQL code.
• Experience supporting database systems that serve as the back-end to web-based applications.
