eCollege is currently recruiting for: Database Administrator III
SUMMARY
The Senior Database Administrator's (DBA) primary responsibility is to
coordinate physical changes to development databases. The incumbent
codes, tests, and implements the physical database. The Sr. DBA is
also
responsible for maintaining the database in good working order and
performing tasks necessary to ensure continued growth and stability of
the database.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be
assigned.
* Designs logical and physical databases;
* Reviews database design updates and changes to inspect the
affects to the physical database and architecture and determine the
impact on other systems;
* Calculates the cost for making changes to the database;
* Approves or declines database design updates and changes
recommended by DBA - IT or the product development team;
* Matches the business requirements of a product with the
technology and implement the database;
* Writes scripts and processes for development;
* Manages and performs maintenance, backups and security for
the development databases;
* Establishes physical database parameters;
* Attends product specification meetings with project team
members to determine the scope and limitations of the project;
* Reviews the workflow chart designed by the developers to
understand the tasks the computer will perform, such as updating
records;
* Creates description of the database to give the developers
an understanding of how the programs should access the data;
* Codes database descriptions and specifies identifiers of
database-to-database management system or direct others in coding
database descriptions;
* Calculates optimum values for database parameters and
architecture such as amount of computer memory to be used by database;
* Specifies user access level for each segment of one or
more
data items such as insert, replace, retrieve, or delete data;
* Specifies which users can access databases, and what data
the user can access;
* Tests and corrects errors, and refine changes to database;
* Enters code to create development database;
* Selects and enters codes of utility program to monitor
database performance such as distribution of records and amount of
available memory;
* Provides training for Junior DBA's on eCollege database
administration procedures;
* Modifies database programs to increase processing
performance, referred to as performance tuning;
* Reviews procedures in the database management system
manuals for defining, creating, revising, and controlling the database;
* Develops the data model describing the data elements and
how they are used;
* Documents physical database description such as location,
space requirements, and access method, to protect company data
resources
against unauthorized access and accidental destruction;
* Performs capacity planning, data retrieval, architectural
design and disaster recovery;
* Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalent required, Bachelors degree in
Computer
Science or related area with five (5) + years of database
administration
experience required. Experience with triggers, designing table and
stored procedures required. Experience with diverse small and large
projects preferred; or equivalent education and experience to
successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
* Proficiency in:
Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 and 2K; Structured Query Language (SQL), SQL
2005 a plus; Active Server Pages (ASP); Visual Basic 6.0, VB.net;
Visual
Basic Script
* Basic experience or knowledge is required in the following
technologies
Coding Fundamentals (variable declaration, program flow, functions,
error handling, etc); VB; Visual Studio; XML - Specifications, theory,
etc; VB Script; HTML; VSS; C# Language Basics (variable declaration,
assignments, flow control, looping, conditionals, object declarations,
etc);and .Net XML Tools (include schemas and xlst)
* Intermediate experience or knowledge is required in the
following technologies
MSF/ Development process. Degree to which the process and
its value are understood; Software Control Management (source control,
config, etc); and ADO.Net
* Expert experience or knowledge is required in the following
technologies
SQL Server - Transact SQL (authoring procs, type of parameters, use of
functions, error handling, transaction statement, table variables,
etc);
and SQL - DB Design, identity columns, relationships, multip parenting,
indexes, triggers, constraints, etc
* Basic Experience Desired
Internet Protocols (HTTP/TCP/IP); COM+; and
Numega
* Intermediate Experience Desired
Coding Fundamentals (variable declaration, program flow, functions,
error handling, etc); XML - Specifications, theory, etc; XSLT -
Specifications, language, etc; and .Net XML Tools (include schemas and
xlst)
* Expert Experience Desired
MSF/ Development process. Degree to which the process and
its value are understood;
* Knowledge of database driven Internet applications
* Understand multiple database environments
* Coding skills in multiple languages required
* Understanding of n-tier application design
* Knowledge of database design, data storage, architecture,
warehousing, performance tuning, recovery, stored procedures, trigger,
and data normalization
* Mathematical skills including basic algebra and calculus
* The ability to extrapolate database schema to meet the
business needs of the application
* Knowledge of resources allocation
* Strong PC skills including thorough knowledge of Microsoft
Office Suite
* Ability to be flexible and adapt to any given situation
* Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently
* Excellent customer service attitude, communication skills

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA) preferred
